Freda Charcelia Payne (born September 19, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan) is an African-American singer and actress.As a teenager, she attended the Institute of Musical Arts; she soon began singing radio commercial jingles and took part in (and won many of) local TV and radio talent shows. In 1963, she moved to New York City and worked with many different singers including Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey, and Bill Cosby.

Andy Caldwell first hit the scene in 1994 with his debut single "Superfunkidiculous" which quickly became an underground club hit, leading to a collaboration project with childhood friend Gabriel Ren. The pair (along with sultry singer/songwriter Gina Ren and turntablist Mei-Lwun Yee) formed the highly acclaimed outfit Soulstice. Caldwell and Ren produced and wrote music for the band's stellar 2001 debut Illusion and subsequent remix collection Mixed Illusions (both released on San Francisco's seminal electronic imprint OM Records).
